Donald’s Education and Career in Sciences
Donald earned his B.A. in Geology and Biology from University of California Riverside. An M.A. and Ph.D. in Geological Sciences from Columbia University. He has an in-depth experience with public presentations, and has previously been a Keynote Speaker. He has been featured in the documentaries, Walking with Prehistoric Beasts, Hyaenodon, and Conspiracy Road Trip: Creationism, Monsterquest and many others.
Donald has authored 42 books. Evolution: What the Fossils Say and Why it Matters, went on to become a best seller. In 2007, it won an Outstanding Earth Science Book award. He has written several other titles, well-known works include: Catastrophes! Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Tornadoes, and other Earth-Shattering Disasters, Abominable Science: The Origin of Yeti, Nessie, and Other Cryptids, with D. Loxton.
He is the author of the 5 most-used college textbooks in physical geology, historical geology, paleontology, sedimentary geology and stratigraphy. Donald has also written over 350 scientific papers.
Major Awards
In 1989, Donald Prothero was a Guggenheim Fellow. He received the Schuchert Award for outstanding paleontologist under the age of 40, in 1991. In 2013, he was the recipient of the Shea Award for outstanding writing and editing the geosciences. He has also received the Gregory Award —in 2015— for his service to vertebrate paleontology.
Past and Present Teaching Career
For over 40 years, Donald Prothero has taught college geology and paleontology. He has lectured at Caltech, Occidental, and several other colleges. Donald currently teaches at Cal Poly Pomona.
